Kirkstall observations – spring 26

A collection of observations gathered during dog walks in Kirkstall.

Ivy

Over the past couple of years, storms have brought down an unusual number of trees and branches in the park, leaving several trees potentially unstable and needing to be made safe. Rather than remove many of these outright, they’ve stripped away the thick ivy that had climbed high into the canopies – ivy that, while harmless to a strong tree, becomes a liability on one already compromised, catching the wind like a sail and hiding the extent of decay beneath. The result, at least for now, is a landscape stripped bare in a way that feels almost otherworldly.

Wall

Standing, fallen, cracked, growing, blinded, brick, stone.

Fence – bird – woodland – bench

The fence keeps you out/safe. The bird fights/falls/flies. The woodland is temporary/established. The bench welcomes/isolates.

River

The river meanders, thunders, reflects, carries, flows, lives.
